Data Carpentries
Unix Shell and Python
for students and researchers from the humanities and cultural sciences
As an official member of The Carpentries, HERMES is hosting the second centrally organized workshop on 3 and 4 April 2025, online. The Carpentries is a non-profit organization that provides researchers with basic skills in programming and data science through workshops. Following the success of our previous workshops on data storage and management, we now want to explore how to get even more out of our data by diving into programming with Python.
What topics will be covered?
The workshop will cover the following topics:
- Automating tasks with the unix shell
- Programming with Python, including:
- Using Jupyter Notebook/Jupyter Lab for writing code in Python
- Variables and assignment
- Data types and type conversion
- Built-in functions and help
- Python libraries
- Working with tabular data using Pandas
- Plotting
- Lists
- „For“ loops
- Conditionals
- Looping over datasets
Prerequisites for participation:
No prior knowledge of the tools mentioned is required for the workshop. Please make sure that you install the required software and tools on your computer in advance. All relevant information can be found in the setup instructions on the workshop website.
Who can participate?
This workshop is aimed at students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs from the humanities and cultural sciences.
When and where?
The workshop will be held online via Zoom and will take place over two days, April 3 & 4, 2025, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The workshop language is English.
