Programming with R
for students and researchers from the humanities and cultural studies
As an official member of The Carpentries, HERMES is hosting the third centrally organized workshop on 13 and 14 November 2025, online. The Carpentries is a non-profit organization that provides researchers with basic skills in programming and data science through workshops. Following the success of our previous workshops on data storage and management, and programming with Python, we now want to explore how to program with R.
What topics will be covered?
The workshop covers topics in this Software Carpentry lesson, including:
- Analyzing data
- Creating functions
- Command line programs
- Best practices for writing R code
- Making packages with R
- Using RStudio
- Reading and writing CSV files
- Writing loops
Prerequisites for participation:
No prior knowledge of the tools mentioned is required for the workshop. Please make sure that you install the required software and tools on your computer in advance. All relevant information can be found in the setup instructions on the workshop website.
Who can participate?
This workshop is open to all students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs from the humanities and cultural sciences.
When and where?
The workshop will be conducted online via Zoom over two days, November 13 and 14, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The workshop will be held in English, and only participants who attend both days will be eligible to receive a certificate of attendance.
